Pheasant hunt dogs Cheney GOP image-groomers are working overtime to show voters the tender, caring side of Vice President Cheney. But feathered creatures still might want to keep their distance. We told you in December how Cheney killed an estimated 70 ring-necked pheasants in a single morning at a hunt club in Pennsylvania. According to reports, Cheney and a nine-man entourage, which included NFL Hall of Famer Roger Staubach, bagged 417 of the 500 birds released in a "canned hunt." Animals activists blasted Cheney for the bloodbath. Outraged sportsmen pointed to the example of President Bush, who hunted quail in the wild on New Year's Day in Falfurrias, Tex., with his father. It wasn't long before Cheney headed to Falfurrias himself. On Jan. 16, he - along with George H.W. Bush and U.S. Special Envoy James Baker 3rd - hunted for several days on a 50,000-acre ranch owned by former ambassador Anne Armstrong and her husband, Tobin. This was a few days after Cheney and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia went duck hunting in Louisiana - three weeks after the Supreme Court agreed to hear Cheney's appeal in the battle over his controversial energy task force. It's not known how many birds he whacked then. But Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, thinks Cheney has solidified "[his reputation] as the Prince of Death.""You can't get any lower than shooting ducks in a barrel [which is what a canned hunt is]," says Newkirk. That's not to say it's some high-minded pursuit to panic birds and blow them to bits just because you walk a few paces into the woods. "Here's a man who's come close to death with a heart attack, and yet it has not dawned on him that all creatures value their lives." P.S.: Maybe Cheney can learned from shopaholic Sharon Osbourne, who is chucking all her fat, nasty furs. She'll auction off at least two to benefit PETA.
