Avian flu viruses evolve via recombination, which requires two genetically distinct viruses infecting the same cell. In Asia a critical mass has been reached and dual infections are very high, in part because of the larger number of infected birds. This feeds on itself and may be driven by inefficient vaccines.

Last year was very bad. This year will be much worse. In is definitely punctuation time.
