Trier does indeed look beautiful, and has lots of things to do...Another site says it is down by the France and Luxembourg border...how big a city is it? Have FUN!

Point is, it was just one of hundreds of encounters I have had all across Europe. You can see it in ordinary everday hardworking people, they sort of light up when they find out you're from America.

Anecdotal evidence to be sure. But it's all I have to go on.

Michael,

I was in Germany when John F Kennedy was in Berlin and said "Ich bin ein Berliner". I know how much good will there is towards the United States. I know how precious that is. You can not get that kind of respect overnight. It took almost 200 years to build.

You know as a business man how difficult it is to build a terrific reputation and how easily it could be destroyed. You also know the value of a good reputation.

If you honestly think George W Bush understands this, that would be somewhat reassuring. But, from my understanding of what is going on, that is not the case. I hope I am wrong. You have to understand, George Bush never had the curiosity and never traveled to Europe on his own time. Very few people between your age and mine, have not traveled in Europe - if they have the means to do so.
