Gus > And the European Union will then border Iran, Iraq and Syria

The possibilities are very interesting, particularly now that the US has made its intentions for an empire in the Mid East and Central Asia clear. (PNAC) If Turkey joins EU, then Europe becomes a serious competitor and if Russia joins the alliance they become a serious threat. I have an idea that Russia and France are already "close" to Iran.

> Turkey might bring its traditionally strong relationship with Israel into the EU, it is more likely that a newly self-confident European Turkey will loosen its bonds with both Israel and America

I think that's historic. Israel has already made its intention clear to arm the Kurds in Northern Iraq and this Turkey regards as extreme provocation. Accordingly, the bonds with Israel are already "loose".

> Maybe he figures a Bush endorsement of Turkey's entry is the best way to keep Turkey out.

Hardly. I'm sure he believed that, because Turkey was a firm ally of the US, it would align with "new" Europe against "old" Europe and thus cause dissension within the ranks. Of course, he may still be right. There's nothing like a few billion here and there to convince Turkey's leaders where their bread is buttered.
