I recall Bernanke's comments on this.

Of course, when it comes to the Fed, it's always hard to tell what will emerge as genuine policy, and what is effectively deception or propaganda (i.e. a "strong dollar" policy).

I do believe that "unconventional means" (i.e. monetizing outstanding debt obligations or holes in the banking system - as they did in the great S&L heist, and will likely end up doing in the case of Fannie & Freddie) is a very real, and in fact likely, policy response.
