Reagan was able to finesse this.

Guliani is looking more and more like the Republican frontrunner for 08. The Social conservatives are up a tree for an attractive candidate to run against him.

Can he survive the attack on his personal past? TWT.

Having an incumbent President in your party blocks EVERYONE from moving up into to national politics.

Politicians put together coalitions to gain power. People join political movements to achieve goals. Don't deliver on the goal you lose the constituents eventually regardless of the finessing.

I don't expect any of the Republican constituencies to just shut up and vote.

The fact that brilliant leaders like Schwarzenegger and Giuliani are having trouble breaking out from state politics

Neither of them have sufficient whiskers yet. One needs a second term as Governor. The other needs a term as Governor or Senator. There is time. They still have some age on their side.
