I couldn't agree more...It's important for us to become respected in the world again...Here's an interesting 'report from the field' from someone who just spent the last few months traveling overseas...

If you do not travel there to find out about them, you may not understand the historic importance of the alliance.

C'mon Mary,

One need not travel to a country to know something about its culture, economy and politics.

You might believe that 'it took 200 years for Europe to like us'. I don't. The people in foreign countries that hate us are usually religious zealots or the effete. My work and personal experience in Europe and Asia revealed the opposite of what you claim. The average European Joe or Jane wants to visit and/or move to the USA.

If we are so hated, why are there throngs of people trying to get into this country - both legally and illegally. Is it because we are such a bad group of people and the USA is such a horrible place to live?

Don't lose track that there are 30-34 nations (both small and large) that have supported us in this Iraq and Afghanistan business. And even some of them are in Europe!

"tremendous positive value" for Europe, I'd say. The historic importance of the alliance is that there was someone to drive Nazis out of their countries, help rebuild the war (i.e. Marshall Plan), keep the Russians out (in the process putting the American homeland at risk from nuclear attack), suppress the Balkan ethnic cleansing wars so they didn't spread and destablize a large part of the continent. Having Europeans love and respect us made it easier for us to do the occassional job like that.

Now I agree its in our interest to have done all that, but seems to me this alliance is more valuable to Europe than to us. I don't see that Europe has done (since Lafayette's day) or is likely to ever do anything of remotely comparable importance for America.
