<You must be a Republican tonight.>

UW, Republicans are a bit too left wing for my taste. Please don't taint me with such Big Government, freedom-suppressing, types. I was delighted to see King George II say the rumours of a draft are a load of nonsense.

He really does seem to think that military service should be a voluntary business.

If he wagged military service in the Vietnam days and played hookey when he was supposed to be doing square-bashing or something, and got a cushy number through his father, I consider that entirely sensible. Good for him that he showed good judgment even in his young days. Resisting the draft was a good thing to do. I was with Cassius Clay, the Louisville Lip. Freedom really does mean self-determination. It's a tough concept for a lot of people to understand. Bush seems to get it [somewhat].

John Kerry, I recall a few years ago, [but I can't remember why he came to my attention], shocking me with his desire to have a knife between his teeth and to get into man on man fights to the death. That's what I recall him saying. He was keen to get into war.

A bloke I know enjoys going bush and killing pigs with a knife. He used to be a champion All Black rugby player. Now mid 50s a retired doctor and all-round talented man [dux of school and all that stuff]. It's a similar thing. Bloodlust seems to be a thing males can really get into.

So I shouldn't be too critical of John Kerry's thoughts of war [which, for all I know were just words]. But his comments gave me the creeps. I prefer my father's attitude; WWII = an unfortunate and unpleasant job which had to be done. He didn't take pleasure in ending German lives, other than in the sense of success at what they were trying to do. He considered the whole business a waste.

I do think that military and police service are high callings for highly talented personable people, not cannon fodder disposal places for excess males, as used to be the case in centuries past when women had 10 children and there was simply not enough room for everyone to live. Islamic Jihad seems to be fed by a huge supply of excess young males with nowhere to go.

Nature forced war onto people [and all animals]. Now it doesn't for humans. War is a choice made by megalomaniacs - the others have to defend themselves.
