The former CBS anchorman praised the work of Haywood Campbell Broun, who founded the Newspaper Guild/Communications Workers of America. The Guild recently presented awards to reporters who "strive to right wrongs and crusade for social justice." Tim Graham is director of research at the Media Research Center. He says Broun was an outspoken and often controversial critic of America's social and political system, so Cronkite's comments should not be surprising. "I wish that we had the time and the luxury to go back and review Walter Cronkite's journalism at CBS," Graham says. "He was called 'the most trusted man in America' -- and I think if we went back and looked at what he actually did at CBS, we'd see that it's not that different than what Dan Rather is doing today." For example, Graham says he saw a clip of an old Cronkite broadcast that featured blatant politicking for environmental extremists. "[And] there's a book called The Gods of Antenna [by Bruce Herschensohn] that came out in the mid-seventies that documents the way the media hated Richard Nixon -- and that certainly included Walter Cronkite," he says. According to Graham, Cronkite was a champion of liberal causes during his day. "At that time, how liberal or conservative America was depended, to some extent, on how liberal or conservative Walter Cronkite was." © 2003 AgapePress all rights reserved.headlines.agapepress.org
