Bin Laden still active, top U.S. official says
AP 2004-09-12

BAGRAM, AFGHANISTAN -- The trail has gone cold in the hunt for suspected Sept. 11 mastermind Osama bin Laden three years after the attacks, but the al-Qaida chief and his No. 2 are still orchestrating strikes such as the recent suicide car bombing of a U.S. security firm in Kabul, a top American commander said yesterday. Maj.-Gen. Eric Olson said the military had not intercepted any radio traffic or instructions from either bin Laden or his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri. But he said the involvement of well-trained foreign fighters in attacks near the Pakistani border convinced him that the fugitive leaders were pulling the strings.

"What we see are their techniques and their tactics here in Afghanistan, so I think it is reasonable to assume that the senior leaders are involved in directing those operations," Olson, the operational commander of U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan, said in an interview.

Germany's intelligence chief said Thursday he believes that Osama bin Laden is alive and continues to exert influence in his al-Qaida terror network.

"All indications are that he is alive," August Hanning, head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service, said at a news conference.

German intelligence officials believe, as they have for some time, that bin Laden is living in the Afghan-Pakistani border area, Hanning said. He did not specify which side of the border.

"We continue to see traces of his activity. He tries to organize, to motivate" his followers, Hanning said. He did not elaborate.

we got Osama. He's dead.

I agree. We never had him "cornered", but I think the B52's might have got him. A man, supposedly the leader of the most feared terrorist organization in the world, and with a supreme ego, would not go this long without some video evidence of his survival to rev up the troops. I think they ran out of pre-taped interviews so al Jazeera has nothing to show that could not be shown as fake. Maybe, if still alive, on election eve here he will come out strongly for Kerry, his boy. Friend of all terrorists. Sensitive to their nuisance value.

You can prove he's dead HOW? Since his remains are worth $25,000,000, I kind of doubt he's dead. Someone would have collected. Don't you think?
