We don't have "a Republican congress." The senate does not have a Republican majority. John Edwards will be casting the tie-breaking votes, not Dick Cheney.

Jane Galt's dismissal of Iraq as 'non-existential' is what strikes me as moronic. The Israelis thought that Lebanon was a non-existential war too; but after they withdrew with their tails between their legs in May 2000 they found they had inspired Arafat to launch the intifada. It was a more attractive option to Arafat precisely because Hizbullah had "proved" that you could make the Israelis run away.

Those who think it's safe to lose 'non-existential' wars will soon find themselves with more expensive and more existential wars on their hands.
