Nadine - the long suffering Union Soldiers voted for Abe Lincoln. This was after the terrible battles from The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House and Cold Harbor that lead to the seige at Richmond. The Union army was on the verge of victory - and would not let go!

let's also not forget that mcclellan was the general that constantly overestimated the strength of the enemy facing him. he was always delaying attacks and really doing much of anything unless he got massive amounts of troops. he was too cautious. he got whipped by the offense of the confederates. he was not a suitable commander, and showed too much weakness to the enemy. he was an engineer and a politician. i think he later became gov. of nj. by the way around port st. lucie, fl, i saw a red colored lighthouse that mcclellan's engineers built.
