RMF, RE: "religion is probably the ONE thing that causes a LOT of these problems. "

That's why it should be separate from government.

Why is that so hard for some people to get?

Why is it so hard for Americans to get that in much of Arabia, the population WANTS religious faith to be the basis of government. In other words, many want the rules of society to be 100% based on religion (sharia), not separate from it. And in promoting democracy in a country, the majority gets what the majority wants. But the US doesn't want religious sharia countries in the Middle East, even if that were to be what the majority of the people in the given country want.

It's quite a confusing circle!

CNN had a poll that said 40% of pollsters said they wouldn't want a gay president. I was shocked by the discrimination. Then again, we haven't had a black person or women run for president. This country is still so horribly biased. Too bad. Many other countries don't have the problem we have, when it comes to accepting women leaders at the very top. They are more advanced. I think it has to do with the fact that respect of a position trumps gender bias in those countries. The US is stuck in the middle.

It really blows me away when so many other countries like the UK have had a woman leader since the early 80s. Even third world countries don't have a problem being led by a woman and yet here we are no closer than we were 100 years ago. And that goes ditto for blacks, Latinos, Jews, Muslims.........we have never had a president from one of those groups. Brings a whole new meaning to the words......land of the free!

And then we are surprised that Bush is so popular!

Laura Bush is the ideal first lady......retiring, shy, quiet........slowly going nuts. Strong women like T. Heinz and H. Clinton are skewered at the sacrificial pit of male machismo! Look how people reacted when H. Dean's wife did not join him on the campaign trail.......its all a lot of garbage.

We set ourselves up as the authorities on freedom and democracy. And yet we have a thing or two to learn!
