"The Cardinals have thrown two of their three best starters at the Red Sox and have failed to make a dent in their offense; all of the St. Louis starters fit the same mold; they lack dominant stuff."

"His body is 37 years old. His body of work, however, is timeless"

<<...If he pitches no more this month, Schilling has already earned a permanent place in the pantheon of playing hurt. In successive starts, he has throttled New York in Yankee Stadium with the Red Sox facing elimination and stifled St. Louis' modern-day Murderers' Row on the biggest stage in his sport.

"I knew if I went out and pitched well, it would be made out to be a much bigger deal than I thought it was," Schilling had said Friday, "Or anybody in the clubhouse thought it was."

In point of fact, however, it was a huge deal inside and out of the Red Sox's cramped dressing quarters.

"It was just a great outing, I mean, a gutsy outing," said Johnny Damon, the Boston center fielder. "You could tell he was hurting out there, but he battled. He wanted to keep going, but we had to kind of tell him no, just in case we needed him down the road."

Schilling's status for the rest of the series is unclear. Dr. Bill Morgan, who struck on the idea of the tendon-suturing as a quick fix, said before last night's game that he wasn't convinced Schilling's ankle tissue could stand a third procedure.

"I don't know," Schilling said. "I haven't thought about it. I mean, you know, I'm thinking about Pedro (Martinez) on the mound Tuesday in St. Louis. I'm a little beat up right now. It's the first time in my life, I think, I've felt my age."
