American weakness in dealing with the Islamists after what I call the Laundry List of Shame ...

Ok - but Saddam was one of the Arab leaders with the weakest connections to the Jihadists. Afghanistan was the base of The Base. The Iraq war has been a distraction and has created a new breeding ground for Jihadists.

The rest of the world was very unconcerned for a long while Hitler built up his armaments and invaded here and there. His perceptions were not managed by resolute action at the critical time. If he had been taken down before he did a lot of damage, a tremendous amount of blood and treasure would have been saved.

Uh, you don't want to use the US against Hitler as an example to beef up your case. Resolute action starting in the fall of 1939, rather than the fall of 1940, might have "taken Hitler down, before he did a lot of damage".

The US was years late to the war against Hitler. Great Britain and France declared war on Germany two days after it started, on September 3 1939. Canada joined the war on September 10 that month and had troops overseas by December of that year.

The US didn't declare war on Germany until after two more years had past, not until after Pearl Harbor.

I put this mini history lesson up for one reason - to agree with your post - timing is everything - but there's a time and place for everything.

Saddam was contained. It was not the time.
