Eastern Europe rides high as China falters

The Far East gets all the attention, but other emerging markets are worth a look
INVESTORS are being lured into the Chinese market by the promise of superior returns, but China has in fact lagged most of the rest of the world so far this year.

Fidelity, the fund manager, is promoting a China Focus fund that gives investors access “to one of the world’s fastest growing economies”. Barclays Global Investors has launched an exchange-traded fund that tracks the Chinese market.

However, Chinese equities dropped by 7% in the nine months to September, even though the economy is growing at more than 9% a year.

Over the same period, emerging markets in general have gained an average of 8% and some countries have delivered double-digit returns. Hungary, for example, has soared by 49% and Mexico is up 25%.
