I agree that New Zealand businesses are very competitive in the world market.

But New Zealand could easily be so much more than it is. That fact that it's not is sad, like someone who never lived up to their potential.

I think this depends on creating a larger employment base at home - rather than exporting their graduates.

The reasons this does not happen are not obvious to me and I think it's a lost opportunity.

Many New Zealanders think it's advantageous to have the graduates work elsewhere and come home to retire. While diverse working and living experiences are beneficial, you lose a lot value creation with the work force elsewhere during their entire career.
