I agree with you. The problem goes back at least to the 70's. I actually don't believe Americans will take energy conservation seriously until they see economic advantages to it.
Still puzzled though, how the Japanese can make higher mileage hybrids that are selling very well in this country, and I still can't get a hybrid Ford Ranger pickup truck.
