Sinclair Smear Campaign Fails To Garner Ratings

NEW YORK -- Sinclair Broadcast Group's controversial news special "A POW Story: Politics, Pressure and the Media" did only so-so Nielsen numbers in some of Sinclair's larger markets Friday despite an avalanche of media attention devoted during the past two weeks to Sinclair's plans to run the politically charged special. In 15 of the larger markets where Sinclair stations carried the special in the opening hour of primetime, "A POW Story" averaged a 2.9 household rating/5 share, according to local market data provided by Nielsen Media Research. Sinclair aired the special on 40 of the 62 stations it owns in various markets nationwide. Of the markets where ratings data was available Monday, "A POW Story" scored highest in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville market that straddles North and South Carolina. The 8 p.m. telecast on ABC affiliate WLOS, which serves the nation's 35th-largest TV market, delivered a 5.5 household rating/9 share, a significant increase from the 3.8/7 the station pulled in the time slot the previous week with regular ABC programming, the comedies "8 Simple Rules" and "Complete Savages."
