I've read a few more accounts of the 101 Airborne.

It seems that at the time they got to Al Qaqaa another army division had got into Baghdad. The importance here is the palaces. Whichever group would capture a palace got to loot it and more importantly, sleep in it for the occupation. If the 101 had stayed in Al Qaqaa they would have been sleeping in old warehouses surrounded by unexplode ordinance. They wanted to get to Baghdad, quick!
