Some interesting data points on DRAM vs. NAND flash from a Micron presentation this morning.

micron.com

- For a given density, NAND flash has a 2.6x-3.0x advantage in cost efficiency.

- NAND prices would have to fall another 20% or so to achieve cost parity.

- The incremental capex cost to build a "flexible" fab versus a DRAM only fab is 10-20%.

I believe that the "cost efficiency" factor that Micron is using assumes a fab running at normal yields. In the past, Micron has talked about the fact that it takes nine months to get a fab running at the same efficiency before the switch. So this leads to a grey area where even though NAND might be more profitable than DRAM, it would need to have some additional premium built in.

Micron also noted that they are looking to become more aggressive in their move to new process nodes in NAND. They aim to hit the 70nm node at around the same time as Toshiba/Sandisk.
