He joined the Reserves. Unfortunately for him, LBJ activated the Reserves after he joined. LOL!

Kerry tried to get a deferment by going to school in France, that did not work so he joined the Navy reserves, and got activated. He served on a ship in the ocean. In his OWN book he said he was not interested in the war, but evidently someone (Chappy Kennedy IMO) thought it might do him some good, so he volunteered for the Swiftboats, the swiftboats at the time were only patroling the outer waterways, in relative safety. He was not expecting that they would be assigned to do river duty.
