Let me give you a name, Nehemiah Scudder. He is a character in some stories and novels by Robert A. Heinlein. What is notable is that in RAH's "future history" stories, Scudder is elected president in 2012 and transforms the US into a theocratic dictatorship. To put it in perspective, the first one of the stories was published in 1940...
