And seems even China felt somewhat surprised by Powell's strong remark --"There is only one China and Taiwan is not independent. It does not enjoy sovereignty as a nation and that remains our firm policy." It is everyone's guess why Powell makes such strong remark just one week before the US election<g>. After all, he is the one most likely won't be in the new administration even if Bush wins. My guess is that Powell, after talking with both Hu and Wen, really understand (very few US politicians understand this, especially those Hawks<g>) that China is dead serious on the "Taiwan is part of China" issue and will do anything to stop Taiwan from separating. On the other hand, Chen is getting harder and harder to control (for the US). Take the latest example, Chen's inauguration speech had been sent to the US for consent before he used it publicly. But he tricked the US for a paragraph which offended China the most because it was not in the original copy sent to the US for consent. The US, I read, was outrageous about this. Plus all other things Chen is doing now (changing passport, Taiwan constitution, and even its name), it is entirely possible that he will push China for some hard action, which would most likely put the US in a very dangerous/awkward situation. Not that the US is afraid of China, but right now it is still in the quad mires of Iraq, it just cannot afford to challenge China yet. So Powell wants to send the strongest message to Chen to wake him up. JIMHO<g> Besides the above major purpose, Powell also wants N. Korea back to the drawing table and ask China’s help on this. This he succeeded. And he also wants China to release that Zhao Yan, a Chinese citizen but works for NYT, and he leaked the news of Jiang’s was going to resign before Chinese official (methink there are other important reasons). China refused this but seems agree to negotiate something on human right.
