Many hold the creator to be their ancestors, or more generally Gaia, the interlocking system of all earthly life. There is a real basis for that meme.

Then by analogy, Thomas Jefferson's "Creator" shouldn't have been there in the first place (July 4, 1776).

On the contrary, there is nothing wrong in mentioning the Creator.

However, that Creator is Jewish, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist et al. Why the cross?

BTW Thomas Jefferson was a major proponent for the separation of church and state.
