Osama hiding in eastern Afghanistan

By Monitoring Desk

KABUL: Osama bin Ladin is hiding in the areas of Eastern Afghanistan close to the Pakistani border but it is difficult for the US troops to launch a ground operation in that area because their number is limited, terrain is very difficult and local population is not cooperative.

According to Geo TV’s programme ‘Capital Talk’ Osama bin Ladin is not facing any difficulties in moving between Pakistani tribal areas and eastern Afghanistan. A well-known Afghan journalist Sami Yousafzai claimed that Osama was hiding in Kunar area of Afghanistan till the spring season of last year but after that he changed his hideout.

Yousafzai works for the Newsweek and he was arrested by Pakistan Army few months ago when he was trying to enter South Wazirastan. It was widely believed that he was looking for Osama bin Ladin in that area. Sami Yousafzai was released after the efforts of US State Department and the management of Newsweek. He shared his latest information about the movements of Osama bin Ladin and Mullah Omar in Afghanistan with the anchor of ‘Capital Talk’ Hamid Mir in Kabul.

Sami Yousafzai said that he visited some parts of eastern Afghanistan and came to know that Osama bin Ladin and Doctor Ayman al Zawahri recorded their video movie last year in the mountains of Kunar province. He said that Mullah Omar has established a small office in the mountains of Southern province Orazgun.

The Taliban leader is easily moving in the areas of Helmand and other southern provinces because he enjoys lot of respect in the Pashtu speaking areas.

He said that Taliban still have strong influence in at least 15 districts of eastern and southern Afghanistan. There are some areas in Zabul where nobody can enter without a beard and music is prohibited. Sami said that Taliban are a ground reality of Afghanistan and President Hamid Karzai cannot ignore them in the next parliamentary election to be held in April 2005.

Geo TV’s correspondent Hamid Mir travelled to many parts of eastern and southern Afghanistan and talked to many people about the law and order situation including President Hamid Karzai. Former Afghan President Burhanudin Rabbani criticised Pakistan for harbouring Taliban in the past.
