Clapper,

<Tempting fate?>

In some ways he can be a phucking moron. Sadly, the main preparation is one of safety. We had the tragic death of an Emerson College student after game 7 - she was hit by a pepper spray pellet (non lethal). As much excitement as there is, there is a quiet and underlying sadness to it all. It still is a game, and no one should ever die as a result of it.

Life is full of harsh paradoxes. On the other hand, superstition has kicked in at hyper-overdrive levels. No one, and I mean NO ONE, is thinking this is in the bag.

The cretins at Fox kept showing the Cards bull pen catcher with a broom in his hand and talking about a sweep...sheesh.

Francona came out with the best remark in the press conference.
"Are we confident you ask? ....has anyone of you ever seen me play baseball?!!" There were chuckles in the press room.

What's very interesting to me is that the series with the Cards, with as much as is at stake, deep down doesn't compare to playing the Yanks.

I do remember being at Fort Benning in the Fall of 67 with all the guys from Boston and St. Louis going AWOL to find a TV set and watch the game....now I understand what it was all about.
