Re: Will the impending right-wing rebellion/insurrection/civil war in Israel mark the end of Judeo-Christian Zionist fanaticism -- or its "official" birth.

Well, I think all that fuss about a brewing civil war among Israelis is a bit overdone... Let's get real: we're dealing with Gaza, that is, Israel's tiniest bargaining chip --if Israelis can't relinquish Gaza then what's their plan for the West Bank and East Jerusalem?? It bodes ill for a viable Palestinian state since Israel's message is: look, we can't go farther or civil war will break out among Israelis... we've pulled out of the Gaza strip and... that's it!

If there ever was a time for Israelis to start a civil war, it was back in 1995 after the far-right assassinated PM Itzhak Rabin --but nothing happened... Worse still: the ensuing election was rigged to defeat Shimon Peres and bring Netanyahu into the top job....

Re: And then -- does it spread to the US -- or is that looking too far into the future?!

I'd put it the other way round: a civil war in the US that's gonna ripple across the Atlantic...

Footnote to my previous post:

Hamas was swift to claim that the Israeli parliament's vote to pull Jewish settlers out of the battered Gaza Strip was a victory for Palestinian resistance.

But Palestinian leaders say there is little to cheer even if Mr Sharon carries through his pledge to remove about 7,500 settlers and the army from one part of Palestinian territory.

"We should look on it as rearranging the occupation in a way that is more comfortable to the occupier," said one Palestinian cabinet minister, Ghassan Khatib. "It's clear that Sharon is linking the withdrawal from Gaza to consolidation of occupation in the West Bank. It's not going to be realised."

The Palestinian foreign minister, Nabil Shaath, said he feared that the Gaza withdrawal would be Israel's "first and last" pullout.

"The Palestinian people will be happy when they see them withdraw from all of Palestine," he said.
