US Durables - Uneven Strength

% change........................Sept................Aug
Durable orders m/m...............0.2...........0.6
Durables ex-transport............1.7...........2.8
Civil Aircraft...................-16.3........-46.3
Computers/electronics............9.3..........5.9

Total durable goods orders increased by 0.2% in September, following a 0.6% contraction in the previous month. Excluding transport, however, orders increased by a healthy 1.7% after a 2.8% rise in August. The uneven pattern is reflected in the differing performances of civil aircraft and
computers/electronics.

Civil aircraft were the biggest area of weakness, falling by 16.3% in Sep after a 46.3decline in August. This category (as with orders as a whole) is highly volatile and subject to frequent and substantial revision.

The most significant area of strength was computers/electronics which rose by 9.3% after a 5.9% previous increase. This category has risen in 7 of the
last 10 months.

Conclusion: Although the pattern is uneven, net/net the orders flow is healthy. The rate of growth on a year to date basis in September is 12.1% above
the same period of last year. Such healthy growth will NOT stand in the way of a 25bp increase in Fed funds rate at the 10th November FOMC.
