Imo, Kerry's presidency will be largely devoted to damage control. Due to Bush things are FUBAR and Kerry doesn't possess any magic beans to make it all go away. But at least he can get the process started.

Re bringing this country together, I think the best we can hope for is to avoid tearing it any farther apart.
