I only hope that IBM will have produced parts in large quantities at the right bins and yields BEFORE such an announcement is made, if it ever comes to pass.

Come on Keith. (IF) they sign an agreement, it's all ready done. I still potentially see this as a large volume low end A64 part. Several speed grades below max so bins not an issue. It's all centered on cost and at 300mm and less than a 100mm^2 chip, the economics should be good. Intel will not be able to undercut unless they trash ASPs for nearly their entire desktop line. Don't think they can do it now. If AMD can come up with a competitive 90nm mobile chip, Intel will no longer be able to dictate prices anywhere unless they accept MUCH lower margins.

Keith, even IBM will be able to manage good yields on low to reasonably binning Semprons.

- I don't think they'll ever get to produce Opterons because IBM is main party in selling mid range servers (agree with TGP here).

- I agree with you that they need to have parts produced in large quantities with high yields with the right bins before making any announcement, but I want to de-emphasize 'right bins' because for Sempron they don't need to be at top frequency. Low to mid frequency (1.8-2.2) will do fine H1 05. Also I think the probability of that with AMD-IBM joint process design and Ruiz now at the wheel greatly increase the chances that any announcement is done after good yield, ok binning, is accomplished. Finally the IBM output for customers like nvidia are finally greatly increasing.

Kind regards,

Rink
