"Earlier in the day, Arafat said he wanted to name former Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas as his deputy, according to the central committee of Fatah, the mainstream faction and Palestinian nationalist movement of the Palestine Liberation Organization."

Maybe arafat is making amends by trying to name Former PM, Abu Mazen(mamoud abbas) as his deputy and perhaps his successor (my inference). He is the only guy there now that the israelis would talk to. Sorry for gloating on arafat but after all he is the guy who used his own people for personal gain while introducing terror to the world.
