The committee consists of Prime Minster Ahmed Qurei, former Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, and Salim Zanoun, chairman of the Palestine National Council, the PLO's parliament-in-exile. PA officials said the committee was formed in line with a "presidential decree" issued by Arafat. Qurei and Abbas visited Arafat in his Ramallah compound on Wednesday night to inquire about his health condition, but were unable to talk to him because of his serious health condition, the officials added. The committee held an urgent meeting in Ramallah to discuss the situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the aftermath of the drama surrounding Arafat's illness. The three officials ordered the Palestinian security forces to be on top alert to prevent an attempt by the IDF to occupy the Mukata compound in Ramallah. Palestinian Communications Minister Azam al- Ahmed, speaking to al-Jazeera, denied reports that the committee had been formed, saying, "Arafat remains in charge." "Qurei and Abbas came to visit Arafat over concerns for his health and not to be appointed in an emergency committee," Ahmed told al-Jazeera. Isn't that the PA all over? They form a special committee (which I didn't expect them to do until Arafat was actually dead, which for all we know he is) and their own Communications Minister denies it. Priceless.
