<>>Both of them said Taiwan was a separate independent country<<

The practical problem for Taiwan is that the rest of the world would not recognize it's independence.

When megalomaniacs get on a roll, it's always easier to shrug and hope they are satisfied with the tidbit they're taking than to do something about it.

Freedom is on the march! Democracy is on a roll! So says King George II anyway. But not where there's no oil, no contracts for Halliburton and not when a totalitarian state throws its weight around. It's easier to go with appeasement and let the little guy be taken over.

New Zealand seems to be lining up to toady to Hu Jintao, hoping he'll buy a bit of stuff from NZ. Too bad about that boring old freedom and democracy stuff when there's a buck to be made. Same for the USA it seems. Same for most.

Totalitarian China has more WMDs than Saddam was ever going to have and they are nuclear-powered WMDs at that. They aren't dirty bombs, they are many megaton bombs. It seems silly to worry about North Korea when China is flexing its muscles.
