My father's family was from a couple of shtetls in Latvia, although my grandparents met in the Philadelphia area. My mother's family, on the paternal side, was from the Naples area, and from the maternal side, from England, though I never pinpointed where. My English great great grandparents came after the Civil War, and were tenant farmers near the Anacostia River, in Washington. My Jewish and Italian ancestors came around the turn of the (20th) century. I have visited (made a pilgrimage to) Ellis island several times. I started out life as a Conservative Jew, but after my parents were divorced, spent time as a Roman Catholic. I am currently "unaffiliated". My family was working class and lower middle class. One grandfather worked construction, the other sold insurance. Neither of my parents went to college. My father is a sales manager/sometime broker for small printing companies.

All of this is by way of saying that I am not a "natural Republican", and that it took me awhile to get used to having voted Republican, and much longer to be comfortable changing my affiliation. Oddly enough, I finally changed my registration to Republican because of Pat Buchanan, so that I could vote against him in a primary.

The last chance of my reverting to a Democrat in the 20th century was the candidacy of Bill Clinton. A bunch of neocons fell for it, since he had been chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council. In my case, one debate among the Democrats was enough: I took an instinctive dislike to Clinton, who appeared to me very smarmy. Compared to him, Jerry Brown seemed like a model of experience and common sense.

Now consider this: Kerry makes me nostalgic for Bill Clinton, who was at least a charming rogue.

There is no way I could vote for Kerry, I find him too offputting...........
