Probably more along the lines of Patrick Henry's theories about how to keep government honest.

IMO, a very big part of the problem is the special interest sponsorship of candidates. When candidates are spending a quarter billion dollars to get a job that pays $400K per year for 4 years, there is something very seriously wrong with the system. Obviously someone is expecting to win that back and it sure as heck isn't the people.

To the best of my knowledge, most areas have access to publicly owned/supported broadcasting stations. The whole system of political donations, ad campaigns, and private sponsorship of candidates needs to be shaken up and eliminated in favor of a system which levels the playing field. A certain amount of air time and publishing space needs to be set aside and equally divided among the potential candidates at public expense. If a media source runs their own editorials, each candidate should get equal time and space to respond, at the media source's expense. I'd even venture to say private groups formed to support a particular candidate or issue be required to publish rebuttals as well. If the First Amendment means anything at all, then the silencing of opposition to various views of and by any publicly declared group is wrong.

The only problem with that kind of solution is the persons who would be responsible for putting it into effect are the same persons causing the problem in the first place. We've got the foxes watching the hen house and it shouldn't be a mystery to anyone why the chickens keep coming up missing
