That has a former U.S. president campaigning to convince island voters to pick democrat John Kerry for president. KHNL News 8's Darren Pai spoke with Bill Clinton who says Kerry is the right president for Hawaii. "If you look at his economic plans, his energy plans, his health care plans, they would all be better for hawaii," Clinton said. Speaking by satellite from his home in New York, Clinton touted Kerry's war record saying Kerry will make a fight the war on terror and secure a lasting peace in Iraq. "What he wants to do is run it better," Clinton said. "Get more troops in there and get more help from other countries." Democrats also launched a new television ad in Hawaii, making it clear they hope to secure the state's four electoral votes in a tight race for the white house. "I think it's a little too late for the Kerry campaign here," said Hawaii Republican Party Chairman Brennon Morioka. "I think the President definitely made some inroads to Hawaii." Hawaii republicans believe governor Lingle's ties with national party leaders helped raise support for president Bush in the islands. "Obviously the president has a very good relationship with governor Lingle. they get along very well, they're very good friends," said Morioka. But, Clinton says island voters shouldn't worry about their republican governor getting along with a democratic president. "I don't blame the governor for being loyal to president Bush. That's what she ought to do. But, the truth is every governor in America has been hurt by the Bush administration because they have cut taxes so much while they were increasing spending and they've run such big deficits that they've cut back on aid to the states." Clinton hopes two other issues will convince island voters to back Kerry - his support for the Akaka bill that brings federal recognition to native-Hawaiians and compensation for Filipino war veterans.
