More GM layoffs point to slow sales

General Motors Corp. has told more than 9,000 workers at five plants that primarily make SUVs and pickups that they will be laid off for a week or more early next year as the company continues to reduce production of its vehicles.

DaimlerChrysler posts $1.2 billion net profit

The Chrysler Group, which has been riding on the buzz of its new Chrysler 300 sedan and Dodge Magnum, benefited in the quarter from improved sales to retail customers, rather than business customers who demand a discount. Reduced marketing expenses and a 10 percent reduction in employees also helped.
