Rodney King Wants To Be Remembered as a Peacemaker

LOS ANGELES - Rodney King says he doesn't want to be
remembered as the person who started the Los Angeles riots
in 1992.

King's videotaped beating by police shocked the nation. He
uttered his famous plea, "Can't we all just get along?" as the
riots raged after four white police officers were acquitted
of his beating. The riots left 55 people dead and $1
billion in property damage in Los Angeles.

"I'd like to be remembered for the person who threw water
on the whole thing. Part of the solution, you know?" he
said in an interview published Sunday in The New York
Times. "I want to be remembered as the person who tried to
keep peace in this country, that I did my part."

King later settled his lawsuit against the city of Los
Angeles for $3.8 million, but most of the money is gone.

King, 39, has since had a string of run-ins with the law,
being arrested for things such as spousal abuse,
hit-and-run driving and being under the influence of PCP.
He walks with a limp since he lost control of his car last
year, crashed into a house at 100 mph and shattered his
pelvis.

Now he has written a rap song titled "Beat Down" and is
working on a book about his life.

Asked if society has learned to get along since the riots,
King said, "We're working through change, but it's a slow
process. Race is the biggest problem we face in this
country. I don't have to explain it, do I? We all know
what's going on."

all will soon see...

Sorry, I had no idea "you'll see" would send Greg into a Christian spiral of paranoia.

"This has to be the strangest thread I've ever encountered..."

It is a tribute to the fine, dedicated, and free-thinking individuals who visit here. People who cleverly combine their love of banter with their tendency to profound thought. Of course, there is sometimes repartee which accidentally goes beyond the common badinage...

Your contribution was finely crafted--and (as are most postings here)--reined in with an admirable self-discipline.

Six paragraphs...all on different lines! I wish our Supreme Court could say such great things in so pithy a way...
