Ooops- must get ready for flight. Am in avoidance mode. This is not a quick answer, but worth remarking upon. First snow is often around the 20th of October, but it's been incredibly warm here this year with only a couple of frosty mornings. I just came in from walking through the golden maple leaves that are about ankle deep all around the front yard. Frosty and crunchy from the night, but it's sunny and mild already this morning. Can't believe this weather! Last year, on November 25, we did a 10-mile hike up on the Canadian Shield not far form here and it was so hot that we were in shorts and t-shirts. Quite incredible. I'm wondering if we're going to have more weather like that this year. When we moved to our farm almost 30 years ago, the snow was often 4-5 feet deep by late January. Now, we sometimes have winters where the ground is almost bare until January 1st. Winterlude festival up here has had to keep moving its date further into the winter every few years as the canal in the city is taking longer to freeze up each year. Interesting, but my friends from Amsterdam have told me that when they were children (almost 50 years ago), the canals would freeze and you could skate on them, but it's been years since anything like that happened. Based on my own studies of the phenology of various plants and animals, I can't help but say that the weather is undergoing change in this region. And with that, Bon voyage! I hope the play goes well! We will want to hear all about it upon your return! -croc
