Household-goods companies are suffering not because European wage slaves are now too poor to buy toothpaste and detergent, but because retail companies such as Carrefour, with their unprecedented buying power and low prices, have been extremely successful at marketing their own brands in household goods.

What is killing Unilever is not that customer can't spend money on their detergents. It is the fact that they have a choice to buy another detergent that cleans just as well and costs half.
