he thesis of the article was that we are a deeply divided country. Apparently people on both sides of the aisle believe what they are saying. They make statements based on facts that are different, and not reconcilable. You appear to genuinely believe different things that I genuinely believe.

Yes, exactly. And worse, we both probably think what we want is what's best for this country.

When we had a civil war, it wasn't that the southerners were evil and the north good or visa versa, but rather each had his own vision of which direction the country should move. There were good plantation owners who treated their slaves well. They could not understand why Northerners were complaining about poor treatment of slave owners and did not like the growing economic clout of the North.

At the same time, there were Northerners were not necessarily all that opposed to slavery[God knows they treated their women and child laborers like slaves], but rather were motivated by certain economic issues and felt the southern way of life was an anachronism that was holding back the country. The conflict between the two sides manifested itself as a fight over slavery which most of us today will agree is a bad thing. But slavery was simply the tip of the iceberg.

I think the situation today is similar to that of the past. My feeling is that Bush is to us what slavery was to 1860 America........the flashpoint that motivates both sides to raise up and fight. But there is a deeper reality masked by the ABB campaign; that is, that there are cultural and value issues that divide us significantly: religion vs separation of church and state; our role as a superpower in the world; how much defense is too much defense; how we value our allies; do gays have the same rights as straights; is our media too liberal, etc. I think these differences between the two cultures in this country have been ignored for too long. I also think that some people feel that things are moving just a little too fast for their blood. Its not a good situation.

Hopefully, the conflict between the two sides can be settled/compromised peacefully. The last thing we need to be doing is fighting each other.
