U.S. Economy: 3rd-Qtr GDP Grew 3.7%, Confidence Ebbed (Update2)

Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. economy grew at a slower-than- expected 3.7 percent annual rate in the third quarter as rising oil prices contributed to a record trade deficit and companies added less to inventories.

The rise follows a 3.3 percent rate in the second quarter, the Commerce Department said. Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the economy, rose at a 4.6 percent pace, almost three times the second-quarter rate. A measure of inflation fell to a four-decade low and business spending grew.
