I followed those links and couldn't find anything that J. William Middendorf said, just some things said by people who worked for him. Kerry's DD214, block 13a, states that his character of service was honorable. He was discharged to the Naval Reserve, which wouldn't have happened had his service been less than honorable. At that time (1970) enlisted men had a six year service commitment (active duty, active reserve, inactive reserve) but reserve officers were in the active/inactive reserve for an indefinite period, until the military decided they could be discharged. In Kerry's case, the Navy decided he could be discharged in 1978. Link to Kerry and Bush military records: awolbush.com
