the deal about 10 calories of HC per plant food calorie is an all-in equation--that's counting all the NG to generate the fertilizer, all the energy to pump the water used to irrigate the fields, all the energy involved in the packaging, all the related transport costs, etc. it's just supposed to be a rule of thumb so in reality it could be plus-minus quite a bit. the basic point is that there's a lot of energy hiding in them thar vittels.

there was a very interesting article on this subject in the February issue of Harper's, titled "The Oil We Eat".
