James Burke wrote all about that concept (of increased dependence on technology and what happens if the chain breaks down) in 1978 in his book entitled Connections.

A good series paralleling the book also with James Burke came out on PBS at that time. Probably worth a revisit considering the extra billion or two people added since then.

The world economy isn't a closed system, though -- it's part of the earth's ecosystem, where energy is flowing in and out constantly. "Order" in this system simply isn't a zero-sum game, as he implies.

Cheers,
K

Hi Darffot.

Thanks very much for posting the Stan Goff article. I've read articles by Goff before, but really never knew his "story".

BTW, I see Goff's name is associated with a Civil Society response demanding an inquiry into U.S. Gov't complicity in the 9-11 bombings. The press release can be found here:

Also, anyone catch John Stewart on Crossfire? Man, John Stewart and his crew have become my personal heroes. Rob Cordroy really cracks me up. Anyway, on the Crossfire episode, John Stewart basically accuses the Crossfire show, and mass media generally, of being a sham and of being harmful to the American Republic. Not at all what I would have expected from a comedian, and it is actually somewhat uncomfortable to watch, but tremendously encouraging as well. The link can be found here:
