Searle,

You make some excellent points.

Re: because the mouth is completely obscured by the beard one has no idea whether the voice is actually coming from the subject or from elsewhere. This would make it far easier for anyone else to read the text while the subject simply mimes and wags his finger occasionally. Of course, and as usual, the speech is very indistinct and synthetic

The poor quality of the video is very suspicious. I'd discounted the scruffiness of the Bin Laden beard attributing it to a lack of grooming. However, this is inconsistent with the quality of the garments that Bin Laden was wearing. The scruffy beard was reminiscent of the state that Saddam Hussein was in right at his capture. Curiouser and curiouser, as they say.

Your lip-synch idea does have merit. It's something I hadn't thought of.

Reflecting on this teaser....

If some PR punk is going to go to all the trouble to create a video saying that George Bush and Bin Laden agree that the American public need more security, who are we to quibble? <vbg>

And if we have any Arabic speakers here who would care to do a translation of the spoken words on the al Jazeera video, we'd all be appreciative. We've seen far too often that what is spoken in these sorts of videos is often translated incorrectly, and to the propaganda benefit of those who would deceive the public.
