so why does all media use Hussein. Was King Hussein, King Husayn too? I questioned you because you seemed to be deliberately using that spelling for some unknown reason.

I don't recall seeing that spelling myself, but a google search on +Husayn +Hussein comes up with 12,300 hits; so it's not rare.

It also turns out that there's another spelling variation.

Husayn. infoplease.com

Husayn. For some names spelled thus, use Husein or Hussein.

The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed. Copyright © 2004, Columbia University Press.

And if that's not bad enough....here's a paper ... meria.idc.ac.il where the author uses the spelling Husayn, but the editor in his note uses the spelling Hussein.

Now that that's settled <s>, maybe you can tell me why in the US we use the spelling "Prague" when the Czechs spell it "Praha"? Would it be that big of a deal if we said the city was Praha. ... or Milano = Milan, or Firencze = Florence, or Roma = Rome?

As far as I understand it, there is only one correct spelling in Arabic; all the english translations are a toss up of preference although Husayn is supposedly closer to the original than Hussein or Husain. I decided to pick one and chose that which the government uses, rather arbitrarily.

Perhaps someone that speaks Arabic might jump in and correct us all.
