Alabama is still ruled by the same deep pockets as those who had plantations and put their interests before those of the rest of people living here, slave and small farmer both.

The States paid a lot for the infrastructure of slavery, especially in terms of security. There was also a payment in good-will, that is to say countries and regions would not trade with the people in the slave states whether they had slaves or not. This is what I mean by a huge subsidy for agriculture. That same kind of subsidy went in the North to railroad right of way.
