Sorry to sound so cynical but the North's behavior esp. towards blacks [freed slaves] after the CW encourages my cynacism.

I don't think I make the point strongly enough that although a single profound idea can start groups on the path to separation, by the time it comes to blows there are many many differences, enough that the original cause can be obscured. Most of these are innocuous customs brought by the separate evolution of their societies and are not directly tied to the issue. Isolation breeds differences.

The North behavior after the war actually illustrates this point. Both groups of whites were racist toward the blacks. That is evidence that blacks would not have been welcomed anywhere in the U.S. except for the institution of slavery.

To update it to the present, I think you can find that nearly all the great political issues of our day can be traced to differences between the evangelicals and ... well those who aren't evangelical. People like Tom DeLay even try to force a physical separation where currently only an ideological one exists. The number of differences, from preferred music, to foods, to notions of common sense are likely to grow.
